The Science, Simply
How Laser Hair Removal Works
Laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis. The laser sends out light at a wavelength that the pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs. That light turns to heat, which travels down the hair shaft and disables the follicle so it grows back far less, or not at all. The skin around it is protected by choosing the right wavelength for your skin and by the GentleMax Pro’s cryogen cooling.
A follicle can only be disabled while it is in its active growth phase (anagen). At any moment, only some of your hairs are in that phase. That is why laser is a course of sessions, not a single visit. Each session catches a new group of follicles as they cycle into growth. It is also why spacing matters: about 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 8 weeks for the body. Coming back too soon treats hair that isn’t ready yet.

Laser vs IPL vs diode. Many Calgary clinics use diode lasers, and some offer IPL (intense pulsed light). IPL is not a laser. It sends out a broad spectrum of light that scatters in the skin, so it is less precise and carries more risk on darker skin. Diode lasers are real lasers that use one wavelength, usually in the 800–810 nm range. The advantage of a dual Alexandrite and Nd:YAG platform is choice: it can treat both a fair client and a deep one with a wavelength suited to each. Honest Expectations
Your Results, Session by Session
Every body is different, but this is the pattern most of our clients see over a course. Results vary with hair colour, hormones and the area treated, and no laser removes every hair.

How long each visit takes: about 10 to 15 minutes for the upper lip or underarms, 15 to 20 minutes for a Brazilian, and about 45 minutes for full legs or full body. Safety First
When to Wait Before Laser
Laser is safe for most healthy adults, but in some situations we postpone treatment or adjust the plan. Please tell us at your consultation if any of these apply to you:
- Pregnancy. We pause laser until after your baby arrives. Pregnancy & breastfeeding guide.
- Isotretinoin (Accutane). Wait at least 6 months after your last dose.
- A tan, sunburn or self-tanner in the last 2 weeks on the treatment area.
- Photosensitizing medications, such as some antibiotics and acne drugs. Bring a list of what you take.
- Active cold sores, infection or broken skin in the area. We treat once it has healed.
- Tattoos and moles. We work around them rather than over them. Tattoos, moles & laser.
- A history of keloids or unusual scarring, or a recent change in hormones or medication.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends telling your provider about all medications, past isotretinoin use, and any history of keloids or cold sores before laser. Does laser hair removal work on blonde, red, grey or white hair?

Honestly, not well. The laser targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair. Blonde and red hair have little of the right pigment, and grey or white hair has almost none, so they don't absorb enough energy to disable the follicle. Dark, coarse hair responds best. If your hair is light, we will tell you at your consultation rather than sell you a package. Electrolysis, which we do not offer, is usually the better route for very light or grey hairs.
What is the difference between laser and IPL hair removal?

IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser. It sends out a broad spectrum of light that scatters in the skin. A medical laser such as the GentleMax Pro sends one precise wavelength that is chosen for your skin tone and aimed at the follicle.
