The Technology

What Is the GentleMax Pro?

The Candela GentleMax Pro is the world's leading medical-grade laser hair removal system, manufactured by Candela Corporation — the global leader in laser aesthetics with over four decades of innovation in medical laser technology. Candela is headquartered in Wayland, Massachusetts, and their devices are trusted in top dermatology clinics, hospitals, and medical spas on every continent.

What makes the GentleMax Pro fundamentally different from other laser hair removal devices is its dual-wavelength architecture. It combines two distinct laser wavelengths — the 755nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser — into a single integrated platform. This means a single device can safely and effectively treat every skin tone on the Fitzpatrick scale, from the fairest type I to the deepest type VI, without compromising on efficacy or safety.

The GentleMax Pro is FDA-cleared in the United States and Health Canada approved, meeting the most rigorous regulatory standards for medical laser devices. It features Candela's patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which sprays a precise burst of cryogen onto the skin milliseconds before each laser pulse. This integrated cooling mechanism protects the epidermis, minimizes discomfort, and allows our technicians to use higher energy levels for more effective hair destruction — all while keeping you comfortable.

At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, the GentleMax Pro is the cornerstone of our laser hair removal program. We chose this device specifically because it aligns with our commitment to serving women of every skin tone and background safely and effectively. Its dual-wavelength capability gives us the most comprehensive laser hair removal capability of any clinic in Calgary.

Dual-Wavelength Science

How the Dual-Wavelength System Works

The GentleMax Pro's defining advantage is its ability to switch between two distinct laser wavelengths within a single treatment session. Each wavelength interacts with melanin differently, and your technician selects the optimal one based on your unique Fitzpatrick skin type, hair colour, hair thickness, and treatment area. This is the science behind why the GentleMax Pro outperforms single-wavelength alternatives.

Wavelength One

Alexandrite 755nm

The 755nm Alexandrite wavelength is the fastest and most efficient laser wavelength for hair removal on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). It is strongly absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle, making it exceptionally effective at destroying hair at its root.

  • Best for Fitzpatrick I–III: Very fair to medium skin tones with light to dark hair. The high melanin absorption rate means the laser energy is concentrated directly in the hair follicle.
  • Fastest treatment times: The Alexandrite wavelength delivers the quickest pulse rates in the GentleMax Pro system, making it ideal for larger areas like full legs and full arms on candidates with lighter skin.
  • Targets melanin precisely: The 755nm wavelength has the highest melanin absorption coefficient among commonly used laser wavelengths, delivering maximum energy to the hair follicle for thorough destruction of the growth center.

Wavelength Two

Nd:YAG 1064nm

The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically engineered for safe, effective hair removal on darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). Its longer wavelength penetrates deeper while bypassing surface melanin in the epidermis.

  • Safe for Fitzpatrick IV–VI: Olive, brown, dark brown, and deeply pigmented skin tones. The longer wavelength avoids the melanin in the skin's surface layer, virtually eliminating the risk of burns or hyperpigmentation.
  • Penetrates deeper: At 1064nm, this wavelength reaches deeper into the dermis where the hair bulb resides. This deeper penetration is critical for effectively treating coarse, deeply rooted hair on darker skin without surface damage.
  • Avoids surface melanin: Unlike shorter wavelengths that cannot distinguish between melanin in the skin and melanin in the hair, the Nd:YAG 1064nm bypasses epidermal melanin and targets only the hair follicle. This is why it is the preferred wavelength for South Asian, Black, Middle Eastern, and other darker-skinned clients.

Why Dual Wavelength Matters

Most laser clinics in Calgary operate with a single-wavelength device, which means they can only treat a limited range of skin tones safely. The GentleMax Pro's dual-wavelength architecture eliminates this limitation entirely. One machine covers ALL Fitzpatrick skin types — from the fairest Nordic complexion to the deepest equatorial skin tone — without compromise. Your technician at Lavish Beauty simply selects the wavelength that matches your skin, adjusts the parameters, and delivers precise, effective treatment every time.

GentleMax Pro vs Single-Wavelength Alternatives

How does the dual-wavelength GentleMax Pro compare to single-wavelength systems commonly found in Calgary clinics?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Not a true laser. IPL emits broad-spectrum scattered light that lacks the precision and power of the GentleMax Pro's focused laser beam. IPL is generally only effective on lighter skin with dark hair and provides temporary rather than permanent reduction. Many at-home devices use IPL technology.
Single diode lasers (808nm only): Diode-only lasers work on a moderate range of skin tones but lack the Alexandrite's speed on fair skin and the Nd:YAG's safety on dark skin. They represent a compromise rather than a specialized solution for each skin type.
Alexandrite-only lasers: Excellent for lighter skin but cannot safely treat Fitzpatrick IV–VI. Clinics with only an Alexandrite laser must turn away darker-skinned clients or risk adverse effects.

Your Journey

What to Expect During Your GentleMax Pro Treatment

Walking into a laser clinic for the first time can feel uncertain. At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, we have designed every step of the process to be transparent, comfortable, and pressure-free. Here is exactly what happens from your first call to your final session.

1

Consultation & Skin Assessment

Your journey begins with a complimentary, no-obligation consultation. Our technician assesses your skin type using the Fitzpatrick scale, examines the treatment area, reviews your medical history, and discusses your goals. We determine whether the GentleMax Pro's Alexandrite 755nm wavelength or Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength is the optimal choice for your skin tone and hair type. You receive a clear treatment plan and honest cost estimate before anything begins.

2

Pre-Treatment Preparation

Before your appointment, shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours in advance. Do not wax, pluck, or thread, as the laser requires the hair root to be intact within the follicle. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for two weeks prior. Discontinue retinol products one week before your session. Arrive with clean, dry skin free of lotions, deodorant, or makeup on the treatment area.

3

The GentleMax Pro Treatment

Your technician calibrates the GentleMax Pro for your specific skin type and treatment area, selecting the appropriate wavelength, fluence, pulse duration, and spot size. As the laser fires, the Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) sprays a burst of cryogen onto your skin milliseconds before each pulse, creating a cooling sensation that protects the epidermis and dramatically reduces discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, warm snap. Treatment times range from 15 minutes for small areas like the upper lip to 60 to 90 minutes for full body sessions.

4

Post-Treatment Care

Immediately after your session, you may notice mild redness similar to a light sunburn, which typically subsides within a few hours. Avoid heat, sweating, hot showers, saunas, and direct sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours. Apply aloe vera or the soothing products we recommend. Treated hair will begin shedding naturally within one to three weeks as the destroyed follicles release the hair shaft.

5

Treatment Timeline: 6-8 Sessions

Return every 4 to 6 weeks for your next session. Hair grows in three phases, and the laser can only target follicles during the active growth (anagen) phase. Multiple sessions ensure we treat each follicle during its growth cycle. After completing 6 to 8 sessions, most clients achieve 80 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction. Some areas may benefit from occasional maintenance sessions once or twice a year to address any hormonal regrowth.

Inclusive & Safe

GentleMax Pro for Dark Skin Tones

If you have darker skin and have been told that laser hair removal is not safe for you, or if you have had a negative experience at another clinic, the GentleMax Pro's 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength was specifically designed for your skin tone. This is not an afterthought or a workaround — the Nd:YAG laser was engineered from the ground up to safely bypass epidermal melanin in darker skin and target only the melanin within the hair follicle.

The reason many clinics cannot safely treat dark skin is that their devices use shorter wavelengths (like 755nm Alexandrite alone or broad-spectrum IPL) that are strongly absorbed by the melanin in the skin's surface layer. When these devices are used on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin, the laser energy is absorbed by the epidermis rather than the hair follicle, leading to burns, blistering, and hyperpigmentation. The Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength solves this problem entirely — its longer wavelength passes through the darkly pigmented epidermis and reaches the hair bulb deep in the dermis.

At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, we treat clients of South Asian, Black, Middle Eastern, East Asian, Latin, Indigenous, and mixed heritage backgrounds every day with the GentleMax Pro's Nd:YAG wavelength. Our technicians are specifically trained in adjusting laser parameters — fluence, pulse duration, spot size, and cooling settings — for each individual skin tone to maximize efficacy while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Understanding the Fitzpatrick Scale

The Fitzpatrick scale is the dermatological standard used worldwide to classify skin types based on their response to UV exposure. It helps our technicians select the correct wavelength and parameters for your treatment.
