Permanent Hair Removal Comparison — Calgary
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis in Calgary
Both laser and electrolysis offer long-term hair removal, but they work very differently. Laser treats hundreds of follicles per second over large areas, while electrolysis treats one follicle at a time. For most women in Calgary, laser hair removal offers dramatically faster, more comfortable, and more cost-effective results.
The Definitive Answer
The Quick Answer: Laser Is Better for Most Women
If you are choosing between laser hair removal and electrolysis in Calgary, here is the straightforward comparison: laser is faster, more comfortable, more cost-effective, and better for large areas, while electrolysis has the advantage for very fine, light, or grey hair that laser cannot target. For the vast majority of women seeking permanent hair removal, laser is the better choice.
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to treat hundreds of hair follicles per second across large areas, completing a full Brazilian in 20 to 30 minutes. Electrolysis inserts a needle into each individual follicle and applies an electric current to destroy it one at a time, meaning the same Brazilian could take hundreds of hours across multiple years. The speed difference alone makes laser the practical choice for any area beyond a very small patch.
At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength medical laser featuring the 755nm Alexandrite laser (ideal for lighter skin) and the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser (safe for darker skin). This means we can effectively and safely treat every skin tone from Fitzpatrick I through VI. Our 555+ five-star Google reviews reflect the outstanding results our technology delivers for women across Calgary's diverse community.

The Science Behind Each Method
How Each Technology Works
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal works by directing a concentrated beam of light energy at a specific wavelength into the skin. This light energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. When the melanin absorbs the light, it converts to heat energy, which damages and ultimately destroys the follicle's ability to produce new hair. This process is called selective photothermolysis, and it is the foundation of all laser hair removal technology.
The Candela GentleMax Pro at Lavish Beauty in Calgary offers two precision wavelengths for maximum versatility. The 755nm Alexandrite wavelength is highly absorbed by melanin and is optimal for lighter skin tones with fine to coarse hair. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis and bypasses melanin in darker skin, making it safe and effective for Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI. Our trained technicians select the appropriate wavelength and adjust the energy settings for each individual client.
Because the laser can fire rapidly and its beam covers an area up to 24mm in diameter with each pulse, it treats hundreds of follicles per second. A full Brazilian treatment takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, full legs take about 45 minutes, and a full body session is typically completed in 60 to 90 minutes. After 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, most clients achieve 80 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis works by inserting a very thin, needle-like probe into each individual hair follicle and delivering a small electric current to destroy the follicle. There are three types of electrolysis: galvanic (which uses direct current to create a chemical reaction that destroys the follicle), thermolysis (which uses alternating current to generate heat in the follicle), and the blend method (which combines both). The blend method is the most commonly used in modern electrolysis practice.
Because electrolysis does not rely on light or melanin to target hair follicles, it can treat hair of absolutely any colour, including white, grey, red, very light blonde, and any other shade. This is electrolysis's primary advantage over laser technology. It is also the only hair removal method that the FDA classifies as permanent hair removal rather than permanent hair reduction, because each individually treated follicle is permanently destroyed.
The significant drawback of electrolysis is speed. Because each follicle must be individually probed and treated, the process is extremely time-consuming. A skilled electrologist can typically treat 40 to 100 follicles per session, depending on the area and method used. A single upper lip session might take 15 to 30 minutes to treat a fraction of the follicles in the area, and multiple sessions over many months are needed to treat each follicle during its growth cycle. For larger areas, the time commitment becomes extraordinary.
The Key Difference in Simple Terms
Laser is like a precision floodlight that illuminates an entire room at once, hitting every target in its path simultaneously. Electrolysis is like using a single match to light each individual candle in that room, one at a time. Both methods eventually get the job done, but laser accomplishes in minutes what electrolysis requires hours or years to complete. For most women in Calgary seeking practical, efficient hair removal with lasting results, laser is the overwhelmingly better choice.

The Right Choice for Most Women
When to Choose Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal with the GentleMax Pro is the best choice for the majority of women seeking long-term hair removal in Calgary. If any of the following apply to your situation, laser is clearly the right technology:
- ✓You want to treat large areas. Laser excels at treating large areas like full legs, full body, arms, back, and chest efficiently. The GentleMax Pro can complete a full body treatment in 60 to 90 minutes. Electrolysis would take years of weekly sessions to cover the same area.
- ✓You value your time. With 6 to 8 laser sessions completed over 6 to 12 months, you can achieve permanent hair reduction and move on with your life. Electrolysis for the same results would require 15 to 30 or more sessions spread over years, with each session treating a small fraction of the area.
- ✓You have dark skin. The GentleMax Pro's 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is specifically designed for safe, effective treatment on dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV through VI). While electrolysis can technically treat dark skin, it carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the needle insertion and current application.
- ✓You want a comfortable experience. The GentleMax Pro's built-in Dynamic Cooling Device sprays a burst of cryogen onto the skin milliseconds before each pulse, dramatically reducing discomfort. Electrolysis involves needle insertion and electric current for each individual follicle, which most clients find significantly more uncomfortable over the course of a session.
- ✓Cost-effectiveness matters to you. For virtually any treatment area, laser is dramatically less expensive than electrolysis when you compare total cost to completion. A Brazilian laser series at Lavish Beauty costs approximately $900 to $1,200. The same area with electrolysis could cost $5,000 to $15,000 or more.
- ✓You have hormonal hair growth. PCOS, menopause, and other hormonal conditions typically produce coarse, dark hair that responds exceptionally well to laser treatment. The GentleMax Pro can quickly treat large areas of hormonal hair growth, with periodic maintenance sessions to address any new growth caused by ongoing hormonal changes.
For most women in Calgary, laser with the GentleMax Pro at Lavish Beauty offers the ideal combination of speed, effectiveness, comfort, and value. Our 555+ five-star Google reviews reflect thousands of satisfied clients who chose laser and achieved outstanding results.
Fair Assessment
When to Choose Electrolysis
While laser is the better choice for the majority of women, electrolysis does have specific advantages in certain situations. In the interest of providing a complete and honest comparison, here is when electrolysis may be the right choice:
- ✓You have white, grey, or very light blonde hair. Laser relies on melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle to absorb light energy. If your unwanted hair is white, grey, very light blonde, or red with very little pigment, laser cannot effectively target it. Electrolysis does not rely on melanin at all, so it can treat hair of any colour. This is the single most significant advantage electrolysis has over laser.
- ✓You have a few individual stubborn hairs. If you have completed a laser series and have a handful of remaining stubborn hairs, electrolysis can be an excellent follow-up treatment to permanently destroy those specific individual follicles. This combination approach (laser first, then targeted electrolysis) gives you the best of both worlds.
- ✓You need the FDA “permanent removal” classification. If it is specifically important to you that your treatment method carries the FDA classification of permanent hair removal rather than permanent hair reduction, electrolysis is the only option. However, the practical difference in results between 80 to 90 percent laser reduction and electrolysis for most women is minimal when weighed against the enormous differences in time, cost, and comfort.
- ✓You are treating a very small, specific area with fine hair. For a very small area (such as a few specific eyebrow hairs or a small patch of fine facial hair) where laser might not be cost-effective, electrolysis can be a practical option given its per-minute pricing structure.
Even if one of these scenarios applies to you, we recommend starting with a free consultation at Lavish Beauty in Calgary. Our team can assess your specific hair type, skin tone, and goals to help you determine the best approach. Many clients find that our GentleMax Pro laser can effectively address their needs even in situations where they initially considered electrolysis.
Investment Comparison
Cost Breakdown: Laser vs. Electrolysis in Calgary
Understanding the true cost of each method requires looking beyond the per-session price. When you factor in total sessions needed, time investment, and the permanence of results, the value proposition becomes clear. The following table compares estimated total costs for common treatment areas in Calgary.
| Treatment Area | Laser Total Cost (6-8 Sessions) | Electrolysis Estimated Total Cost | Electrolysis Estimated Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper Lip | $150-$200 | $500-$1,500 | 8-15 hours |
| Full Face | $510-$680 | $2,000-$6,000 | 25-60 hours |
| Underarms | $510-$680 | $1,500-$4,000 | 20-40 hours |
| Brazilian | $900-$1,200 | $5,000-$15,000+ | 100-300+ hours |
| Full Legs | $1,200-$1,600 | $10,000-$30,000+ | 200-500+ hours |
| Full Body | $3,000-$4,000 | $30,000-$80,000+ | 500-1,000+ hours |
Important note on electrolysis cost estimates: Electrolysis costs are estimated based on typical Calgary rates of $60 to $120 per hour. Actual costs vary significantly depending on the density of hair in the treatment area, the skill of the electrologist, and how many sessions are needed. The hour estimates reflect the total cumulative treatment time required across all sessions. Because electrolysis treats one follicle at a time, areas with dense hair growth require substantially more hours.
Laser pricing at Lavish Beauty: Our GentleMax Pro pricing is transparent and all-inclusive. Small areas like the upper lip start at just $25 per session. Popular areas include underarms at $85, Brazilian at $150, full legs at $200, and full body at $499 per session. Our loyalty program locks in your rate for life, so your price never increases. Most clients complete their treatment in 6 to 8 sessions.
Your Comfort Matters
The Comfort Factor: GentleMax Pro vs. Electrolysis
GentleMax Pro Comfort Experience
The GentleMax Pro features a patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) that is central to the treatment experience. Milliseconds before each laser pulse, the DCD sprays a precise burst of cryogen coolant onto the skin surface. This serves dual purposes: it protects the epidermis from thermal damage, and it numbs the treatment area to minimize sensation.
Most clients at Lavish Beauty in Calgary describe the sensation as a quick, warm snap followed by an immediate cooling effect. Many clients compare it to the snap of a rubber band, and most say it is significantly less painful than waxing. Even in sensitive areas like the Brazilian and face, the DCD cooling makes the experience manageable and, for many clients, surprisingly comfortable.
Because laser treats large areas quickly, the total time experiencing any sensation is brief. A full Brazilian takes 20 to 30 minutes, and you are done. There is no prolonged, sustained discomfort. Most clients return to their normal activities immediately after treatment, with only mild redness that resolves within a few hours.
Electrolysis Comfort Experience
Electrolysis involves the physical insertion of a needle-thin probe into each individual hair follicle, followed by the application of an electric current. The sensation is typically described as a stinging or pricking feeling for each follicle treated. While any single insertion is brief, the cumulative effect over a session lasting 30 to 60 minutes can be significant, especially in sensitive areas.
Some electrologists offer topical numbing cream to reduce discomfort, but there is no built-in cooling technology equivalent to the GentleMax Pro's DCD system. The intensity of sensation can vary depending on the treatment area, the electrolysis method used (galvanic, thermolysis, or blend), and the individual's pain tolerance.
After electrolysis sessions, it is common to experience redness, mild swelling, and occasionally small scabs at the insertion sites, which typically resolve within one to three days. Because each session covers a relatively small area due to the follicle-by-follicle approach, clients must endure this discomfort and recovery cycle many times over the course of their treatment plan, which can span months or years for larger areas.
The Comfort Verdict
For most women, laser with the GentleMax Pro is a significantly more comfortable experience than electrolysis. The DCD cooling technology, the speed of treatment, the minimal downtime, and the non-invasive nature of laser (no needle insertion) combine to create a treatment experience that most clients find surprisingly pleasant. At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, client comfort is a top priority, and our GentleMax Pro's integrated cooling system is a major reason why our clients give us consistently outstanding reviews.

Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions: Laser vs. Electrolysis in Calgary
Everything you need to know about the difference between laser hair removal and electrolysis, answered by the team at Lavish Beauty Laser Med Spa in Calgary.
Which is truly permanent: laser hair removal or electrolysis?
+
Both laser and electrolysis offer long-term hair removal, but their FDA classifications differ. Electrolysis is the only method classified by the FDA as permanent hair removal, because each treated follicle is individually destroyed with an electric current. Laser hair removal is classified as permanent hair reduction, meaning it achieves 80 to 90 percent reduction that lasts indefinitely for most clients. In practical terms, most women find that laser produces excellent long-term results with occasional maintenance sessions once or twice a year. Electrolysis can technically achieve 100 percent removal of treated follicles, but the process is so slow (one follicle at a time) that completing large areas is often impractical. At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, our GentleMax Pro laser delivers outstanding permanent reduction results, as evidenced by our 555+ five-star Google reviews.
How does the speed of laser compare to electrolysis?
+
The speed difference between laser and electrolysis is enormous and is one of the most significant factors in choosing between the two methods. The GentleMax Pro laser at Lavish Beauty in Calgary can treat hundreds of hair follicles per second across large areas, with adjustable spot sizes up to 24mm in diameter. A full Brazilian laser treatment takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and full legs take about 45 minutes. Electrolysis, by contrast, treats one single hair follicle at a time by inserting a tiny needle into each follicle and applying an electric current. A single electrolysis session treating a small area like the upper lip might take 15 to 30 minutes and only address 40 to 100 follicles. Treating a Brazilian with electrolysis could require hundreds of hours of sessions over multiple years.
How much does electrolysis cost compared to laser in Calgary?
+
In Calgary, electrolysis is typically charged by the minute or by the hour, with rates ranging from $1 to $2 per minute or $60 to $120 per hour. Because electrolysis treats one follicle at a time, the total cost for any given area is dramatically higher than laser. For example, completing electrolysis on a Brazilian area might cost $5,000 to $15,000 or more over the course of 100 to 300 hours of treatment sessions spread over two to four years. At Lavish Beauty, a complete Brazilian laser hair removal series (6 to 8 sessions) costs approximately $900 to $1,200 total and is completed in a matter of months. The cost difference becomes even more dramatic for larger areas like full body, where electrolysis becomes prohibitively expensive for most clients.
Is laser or electrolysis better for facial hair removal?
+
Both laser and electrolysis can effectively treat facial hair, but the best choice depends on the type of hair and your specific situation. Laser is excellent for treating larger areas of facial hair such as the upper lip, chin, sideburns, jawline, and full face quickly and comfortably. The GentleMax Pro at Lavish Beauty can treat a full face in about 15 to 20 minutes. Electrolysis may be preferred for very fine, very light, or very sparse hairs that laser cannot target effectively, because electrolysis does not rely on melanin and can treat any hair colour including white, grey, and very light blonde. For most women with hormonal facial hair (which tends to be dark and coarse), laser is the better first-line treatment due to its speed, coverage, and comfort. Some women choose to start with laser for the bulk of their facial hair and then use electrolysis to address any remaining fine or light hairs that the laser cannot target.
Is laser or electrolysis safer for dark skin tones?
+
For dark skin tones, laser hair removal with the correct wavelength is both safe and highly effective. The GentleMax Pro at Lavish Beauty features the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is specifically designed for safe treatment of Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI. This wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis to target hair follicles while bypassing the melanin in darker skin. Electrolysis is also generally safe for dark skin because it uses an electric current rather than light, so skin colour does not affect the treatment mechanism. However, electrolysis does carry a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones due to the needle insertion and electric current causing localized inflammation. Both methods can work for dark skin, but laser is vastly faster and more practical for treating any area larger than a very small patch.
Which is better for large areas like legs and full body?
+
Laser is overwhelmingly the better choice for large treatment areas such as full legs, full body, arms, back, and chest. The GentleMax Pro laser can treat large areas in a single session lasting 45 to 90 minutes because it fires rapid pulses across adjustable spot sizes, treating hundreds of follicles per second. Completing the same area with electrolysis would require hundreds or even thousands of hours of individual needle-and-current treatments over multiple years. For full body treatment, the difference is staggering: a full body laser series at Lavish Beauty (6 to 8 sessions) takes approximately 8 to 12 total hours of treatment time and is completed within 6 to 12 months. Achieving the same coverage with electrolysis could easily exceed 1,000 hours of treatment over 5 or more years and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Electrolysis is simply not practical for large areas.
Which hurts more: laser or electrolysis?
+
Most clients find electrolysis more painful than laser hair removal. Electrolysis involves inserting a thin needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electric current to destroy it. This produces a stinging or pricking sensation for every single follicle treated, and since the process is slow, the cumulative discomfort over a long session can be significant. Laser hair removal with the GentleMax Pro is generally described as a quick, warm snap against the skin. The GentleMax Pro also features a built-in Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) that sprays a burst of cryogen onto the skin milliseconds before each laser pulse, dramatically reducing discomfort. Most clients at Lavish Beauty in Calgary tell us that laser treatment is far more comfortable than they expected and significantly less painful than waxing. The difference in comfort level is especially noticeable for sensitive areas like the Brazilian and face.
Can you combine laser and electrolysis treatments?
+
Yes, some women choose to use both laser and electrolysis as complementary treatments. The most common approach is to start with laser hair removal to quickly and efficiently reduce the bulk of unwanted hair over 6 to 8 sessions, and then follow up with targeted electrolysis sessions to address any remaining fine, light, or grey hairs that the laser cannot effectively target. This combination approach gives you the speed and coverage of laser for the majority of your hair, plus the ability to achieve 100 percent removal of specific stubborn hairs with electrolysis. At Lavish Beauty in Calgary, we can help you create a treatment plan that addresses all of your hair removal needs, starting with our GentleMax Pro laser for maximum coverage and efficiency.
Is electrolysis better for hormonal hair growth?
+
Hormonal hair growth, such as that associated with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), menopause, or other hormonal conditions, tends to produce coarse, dark hair in areas like the face, chin, and abdomen. For this type of hair, laser is actually the more effective first-line treatment because coarse, dark, melanin-rich hair responds exceptionally well to laser energy. The GentleMax Pro at Lavish Beauty can quickly treat large areas of hormonal hair growth with excellent results. However, it is important to understand that ongoing hormonal fluctuations may stimulate new hair growth over time in addition to the hair you have already treated. For hormonal hair growth, many clients benefit from periodic maintenance laser sessions once or twice a year. Electrolysis can be used as a follow-up for any fine or light hairs that emerge, but laser remains the best starting point for hormonal hair patterns because of its speed and effectiveness on the type of hair hormonal conditions typically produce.
Is electrolysis FDA approved as permanent hair removal?
+
Yes, electrolysis is the only hair removal method that the FDA classifies as permanent hair removal, meaning it can achieve the complete, permanent destruction of individual treated hair follicles. This classification is based on the fact that electrolysis destroys each follicle individually with a direct electric current. Laser hair removal, by comparison, is FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction, meaning it achieves a lasting, significant reduction in hair but may not eliminate 100 percent of all hair in the treated area. In practical terms, most laser clients achieve 80 to 90 percent permanent reduction, which is excellent for the vast majority of women. The key difference is that the electrolysis FDA classification is based on treating follicles one at a time, which makes it impractical for large areas. If your goal is the highest possible percentage of hair removal in a small, specific area and you have the time and budget for extensive sessions, electrolysis can achieve that. For most women, laser provides an outstanding level of permanent reduction much more efficiently.
How many sessions does each method require?
+
Laser hair removal with the GentleMax Pro typically requires 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with each session taking 5 to 90 minutes depending on the treatment area. Most clients complete their treatment series in 6 to 12 months and achieve 80 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction. Electrolysis session requirements are dramatically higher. Because each follicle is treated individually, a single treatment area may require 15 to 30 or more sessions, each lasting 15 minutes to an hour or more. Completing electrolysis on a relatively small area like the upper lip might take 8 to 12 sessions over 6 to 12 months. Completing a larger area like the bikini zone can take 100 or more sessions over 2 to 4 years. The total number of electrolysis sessions depends entirely on the density and area of hair growth, but it is invariably a much longer process than laser.
What is the difference in technology between laser and electrolysis?
+
Laser and electrolysis use fundamentally different technologies to achieve hair removal. Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy at a specific wavelength to target melanin (pigment) in hair follicles. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin, converted to heat, and destroys the follicle. The GentleMax Pro uses two wavelengths: the 755nm Alexandrite for lighter skin and the 1064nm Nd:YAG for darker skin. Electrolysis uses a completely different approach. A licensed electrologist inserts a tiny needle-thin probe into each individual hair follicle and delivers a small electric current (galvanic, thermolysis, or a blend of both) to chemically or thermally destroy the follicle. Because electrolysis does not use light, it does not depend on melanin, which means it can treat hair of any colour including white, grey, red, and very light blonde. The trade-off is that it can only treat one follicle at a time, making it dramatically slower than laser for any area with significant hair density.
