Peach fuzz is the soft, fine hair across your cheeks, forehead and jawline. Everyone has it. For most women it is invisible until the light hits it sideways, foundation clings to it, or a ring light makes it glow in every video call. When women ask us how to get rid of it, many assume laser is the answer. It usually is not. Laser is designed for dark, coarse hair, and fine, light fuzz is exactly the kind of hair it handles poorly. The better options are dermaplaning and, for some areas, threading. This guide explains why, how the options compare, what they cost, and how to tell when facial hair is more than fuzz. What Peach Fuzz Actually Is
Your body grows two main kinds of hair. Terminal hair is thick, long and usually dark: your eyebrows, scalp hair, and the coarser hairs some women grow on the upper lip or chin. Vellus hair is short, very fine and light, and it covers most of the face and body. Peach fuzz is vellus hair.
Vellus hair is not a flaw. It is normal on every face. Women usually want it gone for practical reasons: foundation and powder sit on top of it and look textured, it shows up in photos with side lighting, and skincare can feel like it is not absorbing evenly. Removing it is a personal choice, and a safe one when done correctly.
Why Laser Is the Wrong Tool for Fuzz
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment in the hair. Dark, coarse hair absorbs the laser energy and carries the heat down to the follicle. Vellus hair has very little pigment and is extremely fine, so there is not much for the laser to target. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that laser works best on dark hair.
There is a second, less known reason. Medical reviews describe a rare side effect called paradoxical hypertrichosis, where laser treatment is followed by more or darker hair growth in or near the treated area. It is reported most often on the face and neck, with fine hair, and in people with darker skin. The exact cause is not fully understood, but low-energy heat reaching fine follicles is thought to play a role.

Dermaplaning: Our Usual Recommendation
Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation. After cleansing, a licensed esthetician holds the skin taut and uses a sterile surgical blade at a shallow angle, with short, feathery strokes. The blade lifts away vellus hair and the top layer of dead skin cells together. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes and feels like a light scraping. Most people find it relaxing.
Why it works well for fuzz
- ●Two results in one. Fuzz is gone and skin is exfoliated, so it looks smoother and brighter straight away.
- ●Makeup sits better. This is the benefit clients mention most, especially before weddings and events.
- ●No pulling. The hair is cut at the surface, so there is no plucking pain and little redness.
- ●It pairs well. Dermaplaning before a facial or HydraFacial removes the layer that products have to get through.
Will it grow back thicker? No. This is the most common worry, and it is a myth. Cutting a hair does not change the follicle. Mayo Clinic explains that shaved hair does not grow back thicker, darker or faster. It only has a blunt tip for a few days, which can feel slightly different. Peach fuzz grows back as peach fuzz.
Professional or at home? Home face razors are popular, and they can work for occasional touch-ups. A professional treatment is more thorough, uses a sterile blade at the right angle, and includes a proper cleanse and skin check. If you have acne, rosacea or very reactive skin, have it done professionally or not at all.

Threading and Waxing: When They Make More Sense
Threading lifts hair out from the root, so results can last a little longer than dermaplaning. It is precise, which makes it the better tool for the hairline, forehead edge, sideburns and brows. It is also better when fuzz is mixed with a few darker, thicker hairs.
Threading a whole face of very fine fuzz is possible, but it takes longer and can leave sensitive skin pink for a few hours. It also does not exfoliate. Many clients combine the two: threading for brows and sideburns, dermaplaning for the cheeks and forehead.
Full-face waxing is the fastest option, but wax also grips the skin. It is not a good choice if you use retinoids, acne treatments or exfoliating acids, or if your skin is dry and reactive. Our threading vs waxing guide goes into more detail.

When It's More Than Fuzz
Sometimes what starts as fuzz changes. If you notice fine hairs turning into dark, coarse ones on your chin, jaw, upper lip, neck, chest or stomach, that is worth paying attention to. The Endocrine Society describes hirsutism as excess coarse hair in a male-type pattern in women, and notes that it is often linked to higher androgen (male hormone) levels, most commonly from polycystic ovary syndrome.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does laser hair removal work on peach fuzz?

Generally, no. Laser targets pigment in the hair, and peach fuzz (vellus hair) is fine and light, so it carries too little pigment to absorb the energy well. Treating fine facial hair with laser has also been linked, rarely, to paradoxical hair growth, where hair nearby grows darker or thicker. For these reasons we do not laser peach fuzz. Laser is for darker, coarser hair on areas like the upper lip, chin and jaw.
Will my peach fuzz grow back thicker after dermaplaning?

No. Removing hair does not change its thickness, colour or growth rate. Because the blade cuts the hair straight across, regrowth has a blunt tip and can feel slightly different for a few days, but it is the same soft vellus hair. Mayo Clinic makes the same point about shaving.
How long does dermaplaning last?

Most women find their skin feels smooth for about three to four weeks, as the fuzz grows back and dead skin builds up again. Many book it every four weeks, often together with a facial or HydraFacial.
Is threading or dermaplaning better for facial fuzz?

Dermaplaning is better for fine fuzz spread over the cheeks, forehead and jaw, because it clears large areas smoothly and exfoliates at the same time. Who should not get dermaplaning?

Skip it during an active acne breakout, a rosacea or eczema flare, or on sunburned or broken skin. If you use a prescription retinoid or have recently used isotretinoin, tell your esthetician first. Dermaplaning works well for most other skin types, including dry winter skin.
When is facial hair more than peach fuzz?

If you notice dark, coarse hairs appearing on the chin, jaw, upper lip, chest or stomach, especially along with irregular periods, acne or weight changes, it is worth seeing your doctor.
