First, the thing we most want you to hear: upper lip and chin hair is incredibly common in women, and there is nothing embarrassing about it. We see it every single day in our treatment rooms, on every skin tone and at every age. Some women have soft, fine hair; others have a few coarse chin hairs that seem to reappear overnight. Either way, you have good options. In this guide we compare threading, waxing, dermaplaning and GentleMax Pro laser honestly, including what each costs over one to two years using our real posted prices, why grey or light hairs still need threading, and when it is worth checking in with your doctor. If you already know you want to explore laser, start with our facial laser hair removal in Calgary page.

Why Women Get Upper Lip & Chin Hair
Everyone has hair follicles across the face. Whether those follicles produce fine, nearly invisible “peach fuzz” or darker, coarser hair depends mostly on two things: genetics and hormones. Many women of South Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean heritage naturally have more visible facial hair, and it often runs in families. That is simply biology.
Hormones are the other half of the story. Androgens (hormones present in every woman in small amounts) can turn fine facial hair into thicker, darker hair. That is why many women notice changes around puberty, during or after pregnancy, and especially through perimenopause and menopause, when the balance of estrogen to androgens shifts. A few stubborn chin hairs in your forties or fifties are extremely common.
For some women, a condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) causes more noticeable growth on the chin, jawline and upper lip. We will not repeat that whole topic here — our dedicated guide to laser hair removal for PCOS in Calgary covers what to expect, why sessions can take longer, and how to work alongside your doctor.
Threading, Waxing, Dermaplaning & Laser Compared
There is no single “right” method. Each one suits a different kind of hair, skin and lifestyle. Here is an honest look at all four, with prices from our posted menu.
Threading — $6 upper lip, $6 chin
A twisted cotton thread lifts hairs out from the root, several at a time. It is fast (often just a few minutes), very precise, and uses no heat or chemicals, which makes it a favourite for sensitive skin and for women using retinoids who cannot wax. Results usually last around two to four weeks. It works on every hair colour, including grey and white. The trade-off is that it is an ongoing routine, and some women find the upper lip tender. See our threading services, and for a brow-focused comparison read eyebrow threading vs waxing. (Eyebrow threading is $10; full-face threading is $35.)
Waxing — $8 upper lip, $10 chin
Wax removes hair from the root across a whole area in one pull, so it is efficient if you have fine hair spread over a larger zone. Results last roughly three to four weeks. Wax can be harder on thin or reactive facial skin, and it is usually not suitable if you use prescription retinoids. Like threading, it removes every hair colour. Explore our waxing services.
Dermaplaning — $50
Dermaplaning uses a sterile blade to gently remove fine vellus hair and dead surface skin, leaving a smooth base for makeup. It is a lovely skin treatment, but it is best for soft peach fuzz across the face, not for a handful of coarse chin hairs. It cuts hair at the surface rather than removing the root, so regrowth appears within a few weeks. (And no, the hair does not grow back thicker.)
GentleMax Pro Laser — $25 upper lip, $35 chin per session
Laser targets the pigment in the hair and heats the follicle, reducing its ability to regrow. Over a series of sessions, dark hair becomes finer, sparser and slower to return. We use the Candela GentleMax Pro, which combines a 755nm Alexandrite wavelength with a 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength that bypasses surface pigment, so it is suitable for every skin tone. Facial hair is hormone-sensitive, so most women need about 8 to 12 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with occasional maintenance afterwards. The result is permanent hair reduction, not a promise that every hair disappears forever. Learn more in our facial laser hair removal guide and in laser hair removal for every skin tone.
If you want to cover more than the lip and chin, our face laser menu also includes sideburns ($35), neck ($40), half face ($65) and full face ($85) per session. Every price is on our pricing page.
Grey, White & Blonde Hair: Why Threading Stays
This is the part many laser ads skip. Laser needs pigment in the hair to work. Grey, white, very light blonde and red hairs do not contain enough melanin for the laser to target, so they will not respond, no matter how many sessions you have or which device is used.
The honest plan for mixed hair
Many women over forty have a mix: dark hairs that laser treats beautifully, plus a few white ones. The practical approach is to reduce the dark hairs with laser and keep a quick threading appointment for the light ones. You will still thread, just far less. If most of your facial hair has already turned white, laser is not the right tool, and threading or waxing will serve you better.
Electrolysis is a separate method, offered by other providers, that treats hair regardless of colour, one follicle at a time. We do not offer it, but if you are curious how it compares, read our laser vs electrolysis overview.
The Real Cost Over One to Two Years
Here is transparent math for treating both the upper lip and chin, using our posted per-visit prices. Your frequency may differ, so treat these as illustrations, not quotes.
- ●Threading: $6 + $6 = $12 per visit. Every 3 weeks is about 17 visits a year = $204/year, or $408 over two years.
- ●Waxing: $8 + $10 = $18 per visit. Every 4 weeks is about 13 visits a year = $234/year, or $468 over two years.
- ●Dermaplaning: $50 per visit. Every 4 weeks = $650/year, or $1,300 over two years (and it is not designed for coarse chin hair).
- ●GentleMax Pro laser: $25 + $35 = $60 per session. A series of 8 to 12 sessions = $480–$720. Add an illustrative 2 to 4 maintenance sessions in year two and the two-year total is roughly $600–$960. Upper lip alone is $200–$300 for the series.
So, honestly: over two years, threading is often the least expensive option in dollars. Laser is an investment you make up front. What it buys is different — far fewer appointments once your series is done, less regrowth to hide between visits, and relief from the irritation and ingrown hairs that frequent root removal can cause. The further past year two you go, the more that up-front investment tends to pay off, because you are mostly maintaining rather than removing every few weeks.
If you have mostly fine, light or grey hair, threading is likely your best value. If you have dark, coarse hairs that return quickly and you are tired of the routine, laser is usually worth it.
When to See a Doctor
Most facial hair is simply genetic or part of normal hormonal change. But sudden, rapid growth of thick, dark hair is different, and it deserves a medical check. Book an appointment with your family doctor if you notice:
- • Coarse, dark hair that appears or spreads quickly over weeks or months
- • A deepening voice or increased muscle mass
- • Irregular, infrequent or missed periods
- • New or worsening acne, or thinning hair on the scalp
- • Facial hair changes after starting a new medication
These signs can point to an underlying hormonal condition. Excess male-pattern hair growth in women is called hirsutism, and a doctor can investigate the cause. Hair removal and medical care work well together: your doctor addresses the why, and we help with the hair itself.
Which Option Is Right for You?
Choose threading if…
your hair is grey, white or light; you have sensitive skin or use retinoids; or you want a quick, low-cost tidy-up with precise results.
Choose waxing if…
you have fine hair spread across a larger area and your skin tolerates wax well.
Choose dermaplaning if…
your main concern is soft peach fuzz and you also want smoother-looking skin and a better base for makeup.
Choose laser if…
your hairs are dark and coarse, regrow quickly, cause ingrowns or irritation, and you want long-term permanent hair reduction with fewer appointments. It is safe for all skin tones with the GentleMax Pro.
Not sure? That is exactly what a $10 consultation is for. Your technician will look at your hair colour, texture and skin, talk through your history, and recommend the method (or combination) that actually fits you — in a private, women-exclusive setting with no judgement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for women to have upper lip and chin hair?
+
Yes, very normal. Almost every woman has some facial hair, and many have darker or coarser hairs on the upper lip and chin. Genetics, ethnic background, age and normal hormonal shifts (puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause) all play a role. It is a common cosmetic concern, not a personal failing, and there are several good ways to manage it.
Which is better for upper lip hair: threading, waxing or laser?
+
It depends on your hair and your goals. Threading is fast, precise and gentle on skin that dislikes wax, and at Lavish Beauty it is $6 for the upper lip. Waxing ($8 upper lip) clears a larger area at once. Laser with the Candela GentleMax Pro ($25 per upper lip session) offers long-term permanent hair reduction for dark hair, so you need far fewer appointments over time. Many women combine them: laser for the dark hairs, threading for any grey, white or blonde hairs laser cannot target.
Does laser work on grey, white or blonde chin hairs?
+
No. Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment (melanin) in the hair. Grey, white, very light blonde and red hairs have little or no pigment, so the laser has nothing to absorb and the follicle is not affected. For those hairs, threading or waxing remain the practical options at the spa. Electrolysis, which works independently of hair colour, is offered by other providers; our laser vs electrolysis page explains the difference.
How many laser sessions do I need for upper lip and chin hair?
+
Facial hair usually needs more sessions than body areas because it is strongly influenced by hormones. Most women need roughly 8 to 12 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and some need occasional maintenance sessions afterwards, especially if hormones are a factor. Laser provides permanent hair reduction, not a guarantee that every hair will be gone forever.
Is laser safe for chin hair on darker skin?
+
Yes, with the right device. The Candela GentleMax Pro includes a 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength that bypasses surface pigment, making it suitable for every skin tone from Fitzpatrick I to VI. Your technician assesses your skin and hair at a consultation and chooses the correct wavelength and settings for you.
Can I keep threading or waxing while I do laser?
+
Between laser sessions you should avoid threading, waxing and tweezing on the treatment area, because laser needs the hair root in the follicle to work. Shaving or trimming is fine. We generally suggest stopping threading and waxing on the area about four weeks before your first session. Any grey or white hairs that laser will not treat can still be threaded.
When should I see a doctor about facial hair?
+
See your family doctor promptly if thick, dark hair appears suddenly or spreads quickly, or if it comes with other changes such as a deepening voice, irregular or missed periods, new acne, hair thinning on the scalp or increased muscle mass. These can point to a hormonal condition that deserves medical assessment. Hair removal treats the hair; a doctor looks for the cause.
