Microneedling vs HydraFacial in Calgary: Which One Does Your Skin Actually Need?

Published September 2026 · 10 min read

Here is the short answer: microneedling rebuilds, a HydraFacial refreshes. Microneedling works beneath the surface to remodel texture, so it is the right tool for acne scars, rough or uneven texture, and early fine lines. A HydraFacial works on the surface and in the pores, so it is the right tool for congestion, dullness, dehydration and looking your best for an event this week. They are not competitors so much as two different jobs — and the most common mistake we see is choosing one to fix a problem only the other can solve. This guide compares them honestly: how each works, what each is genuinely best for, downtime, sessions, how to combine them, skin-tone considerations, and what each costs per result. If you already know your concern, you can jump straight to our microneedling in Calgary or HydraFacial in Calgary pages.

How Each Treatment Works

Microneedling: controlled micro-injury, real remodelling

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a pen of very fine sterile needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin reads those channels as a signal to repair, and it responds by producing fresh collagen and elastin over the following weeks. That is why the results are gradual and cumulative: you are not polishing the surface, you are prompting the skin to rebuild its own support structure. Our technicians adjust needle depth for each zone of the face — lighter around the eyes, deeper where scarring sits.

HydraFacial: cleanse, extract, hydrate — in one sitting

A HydraFacial uses patented Vortex-Fusion technology: a spiral tip that exfoliates and lifts away dead skin, suction that painlessly clears debris from pores, and infusion of antioxidant, peptide and hyaluronic serums. There are no needles and nothing that deliberately injures the skin. At Lavish Beauty, both our Signature (60 minutes) and Platinum (90 minutes) HydraFacials include LED light therapy and a hydrojelly mask; the Platinum adds a lymphatic sculpting massage and a personalized booster serum. The result is immediate: clean pores, a plumper, dewier surface and visible glow.

If you want to go deeper on either one, our guide to microneedling benefits covers the collagen side in detail, and HydraFacial vs a regular facial explains what makes the Vortex-Fusion technology different from a traditional facial.

Match the Treatment to Your Concern

The easiest way to decide is to ask one question: is my concern in the structure of my skin, or on its surface?

Choose microneedling if your main concern is…

  • ●Indented acne scars. Rolling and shallow boxcar scars are exactly what collagen remodelling is designed for. See our acne scar treatment page for how we plan a scar series.
  • ●Rough or uneven texture that exfoliation alone has never smoothed out.
  • ●Enlarged-looking pores caused by loss of firmness rather than congestion.
  • ●Early fine lines and softening firmness, especially around the cheeks and forehead.

Choose a HydraFacial if your main concern is…

  • ●Congestion and blackheads, particularly around the nose and chin.
  • ●Dullness and dehydration — very common through a dry Calgary winter and after chinook swings.
  • ●Active, mild breakouts where needling is not appropriate yet.
  • ●An event in the next few days — a wedding, a photoshoot, a holiday party — when you need visible results with zero downtime.

An honest note: a HydraFacial will make scarred skin look better for a while, because clean, hydrated skin reflects light more evenly. But it will not change the depth of a scar. Likewise, microneedling is not the fastest way to clear clogged pores or rescue dehydrated skin the week of your event. Using each for its real strength is what gets you results.

Downtime and Number of Sessions

HydraFacial: there is essentially no downtime. Some clients look slightly flushed for an hour or so, then it is straight back to work or dinner. The glow is visible the same day and typically lasts about a week, while the deeper benefits of regular clearing and hydration build when you repeat it every 4 to 6 weeks.

Microneedling: expect skin to look pink, similar to a mild sunburn, for roughly one to three days, sometimes with light dryness or flaking afterward. You will want to skip makeup for the first day and be diligent with sunscreen. Because collagen takes time to form, most clients do a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart; milder texture concerns sit at the lower end, while deeper acne scarring usually benefits from 5 to 6. Improvement continues to build for weeks after your final session.

Plan around your calendar

Book microneedling before a quiet weekend, and finish your last session at least four to six weeks before any major event. Book a HydraFacial three to seven days before the event itself.

How to Combine and Sequence Them

For many women the best answer is not “either/or” but “both, in the right order.” Microneedling does the structural work; a HydraFacial keeps the surface clear and hydrated in between. We simply do not stack them in the same visit — freshly needled skin needs a few days of calm, gentle care.

A sample sequence for texture and glow

Start with a HydraFacial if you are congested

Clearing pores and calming the surface first gives your microneedling series a cleaner starting point, especially if breakouts have recently settled.

Then begin your microneedling series

Roughly a week or two after your HydraFacial, begin microneedling, repeating every 4 to 6 weeks.

Slot HydraFacials into the gaps

Once your skin has fully settled after a needling session — typically around two weeks — a HydraFacial can refresh and hydrate before your next one. Your technician confirms exact spacing.

Maintain with HydraFacial

After your series, regular HydraFacials help keep newly smoothed skin clear and luminous.

Skin-Tone Considerations

Both treatments can suit every skin tone, from very fair to deep, when they are performed well. Neither relies on heat or light energy to work, which is a genuine advantage for melanin-rich skin that can be prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks after irritation).

A HydraFacial is the gentlest of the two and is a comfortable option for almost anyone. Microneedling does involve controlled injury, so technique matters: appropriate needle depth, not over-treating, and strict aftercare. The single most important aftercare step for medium and deep complexions is daily broad-spectrum sunscreen while the skin heals — sun exposure on freshly treated skin is the most common trigger for unwanted darkening.

Microneedling is also not right for everyone at every moment. We do not needle over active breakouts or infections, during pregnancy, or within about six months of isotretinoin. In those situations a HydraFacial is often the right interim choice.

Cost per Result, Not per Visit

Comparing the sticker price of one visit is misleading, because these treatments deliver different kinds of results on different timelines. Here is how our posted pricing translates into a realistic plan:

  • ●Microneedling: $300 full face, or $350 including the neck. A series of 3 to 6 full-face sessions works out to $900 to $1,800. What you are paying for is structural change that builds and lasts, rather than a glow that fades.
  • ●HydraFacial: Signature $199 (60 minutes) or Platinum $375 (90 minutes). Optional add-ons include a Lip or Eye Perk ($50 each) and dermaplaning ($50). One visit delivers a same-day result; ongoing benefit comes from repeating every 4 to 6 weeks.

The money is wasted only when the treatment does not match the concern. Monthly HydraFacials for a year will not remodel an acne scar, and a single microneedling session will not rescue dull skin the night before your event. Spend on the right tool first, then maintain. For full breakdowns, see our microneedling cost guide and HydraFacial cost guide, or the complete menu on our pricing page.

Still unsure which your skin needs? A $10 consultation lets one of our technicians look at your skin in person and recommend the right starting point — and it is credited toward your first treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microneedling or HydraFacial better for acne scars?

+

Microneedling. Indented acne scars sit in the deeper layers of the skin, and microneedling works by creating controlled micro-channels that prompt the skin to build new collagen and gradually lift and soften those scars. A HydraFacial works on the surface: it cleanses, exfoliates, extracts and hydrates, which makes skin look smoother and brighter but does not remodel a true scar. HydraFacial is a lovely complement between microneedling sessions, but it is not a scar treatment on its own.

Which is better before a wedding or big event?

+

For a glow within the week, a HydraFacial. There is no downtime, so most clients book it three to seven days before an event and walk out with clear, hydrated, makeup-ready skin. Microneedling is a longer-term project: complete your last session at least four to six weeks before the event so any redness has settled and collagen has had time to build. Many brides do both, with microneedling months ahead and a HydraFacial in the final week.

Can I get microneedling and a HydraFacial on the same day?

+

We do not recommend stacking them in a single visit. Freshly microneedled skin needs a few days of calm, gentle care, and adding vortex extraction and exfoliation on top of it is more than the skin needs. Instead, alternate them: for example a HydraFacial, then microneedling a couple of weeks later, then another HydraFacial once your skin has fully settled. Your technician will set the exact spacing for your skin.

How much downtime does each treatment have?

+

A HydraFacial has essentially none. You may look slightly flushed for an hour or so, and you can return to your day right away. Microneedling typically leaves skin pink, similar to a mild sunburn, for about one to three days, sometimes with light dryness or flaking as it renews. Most clients plan microneedling before a quiet weekend.

Are both treatments safe for darker skin tones?

+

Yes, both can be suitable for every skin tone when performed correctly. HydraFacial does not use heat or light, so it is very gentle on melanin-rich skin. Microneedling also uses no heat or light, which is one reason it is often preferred for deeper complexions over some resurfacing options, but needle depth, technique and aftercare, especially sun protection, still matter to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A consultation lets your technician tailor both.

How many sessions of each will I need?

+

Microneedling is a series: most clients do 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with deeper acne scarring usually needing the higher end. A single HydraFacial gives a visible glow the same day, and most clients maintain results with a treatment every 4 to 6 weeks.

Who should not have microneedling?

+

Microneedling is not appropriate over active breakouts, open wounds or infections in the treatment area, during pregnancy, or if you have taken isotretinoin within roughly the past six months. If any of these apply, a HydraFacial is often a gentler option in the meantime. Your technician will review your health history before any treatment.
