Most women who ask us about stomach or chest hair start the same way: “This might be a strange question, but…” It is not strange. A line of dark hair below the belly button, a few coarse hairs between the breasts or around the chest, or hair that fills in across the lower stomach is common, and far more women deal with it than talk about it. These areas respond well to laser hair removal when the hair is dark and coarse, and they are quick to treat. This guide covers why hair grows here, when it is worth a conversation with your doctor, what treatment involves, how privacy is handled, how many sessions to expect, and what it costs at our Calgary studio.

Why Women Grow Hair on the Chest and Stomach
The chest, stomach, face and back are what doctors call androgen-sensitive areas. The follicles there respond to androgens, the hormones sometimes called “male” hormones that every woman also makes. The Endocrine Society explains that higher androgen levels can turn fine, light vellus hair into larger, darker terminal hair. How strongly your follicles respond depends a lot on genetics.
Common reasons
- ●Genetics and background. Women of South Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean heritage often have more, and darker, body hair. It runs in families.
- ●Hormonal shifts. Puberty, pregnancy, stopping or changing birth control, and perimenopause can all change hair growth.
- ●Polycystic ovary syndrome. PCOS is the most common cause of excess coarse hair in women, according to the Endocrine Society.
- ●Some medications. A few medicines can increase hair growth. Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you if yours is one of them.
When to Mention It to Your Doctor
Hair you have had since your teens and that has stayed about the same is usually just how your body is. It is worth seeing your family doctor if the hair is new or increasing quickly, or if it comes with irregular periods, acne, scalp hair thinning or weight changes. Excess coarse hair in a male-type pattern is called hirsutism, and treating any underlying cause first can make laser more effective and results longer-lasting.
You do not need a diagnosis to book laser. If you do have PCOS, our laser for PCOS page explains how we plan treatment for hormonal hair.
Why Shaving and Waxing Are Hard Here
Stomach and chest skin is thin and sensitive, and these areas sit right under waistbands and bra bands. That makes the usual methods frustrating:
- ●Shaving leaves prickly stubble within a day or two, which rubs against clothing and itches.
- ●Waxing is painful on thin skin and often causes ingrown hairs under tight waistbands.
- ●Plucking individual chest hairs works for one or two, but can leave bumps and dark marks when repeated, especially in medium and deep skin.
- ●Bleaching creams hide the colour for a while but can irritate sensitive skin, and the hair is still there.
If ingrown hairs along the waistband or bikini line are a problem for you, read how laser helps with ingrown hairs.
How Laser Treats These Areas
Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which heats and damages the follicle so it grows back less, or not at all. Only hairs in their active growth phase respond at any one time, so treatment is a series of sessions rather than a single visit.
Who responds well
Dark, coarse hair, like most happy trails and chest hairs, is the ideal target. Our Candela GentleMax Pro has two wavelengths, so we can treat light and deep skin tones. The 1064nm setting is used for medium and deep skin.
Who responds poorly
Very fine, light hair, and grey, white, red or blonde hair, have too little pigment for laser to target well. We will tell you at your consultation if some of your hair falls into this group.
How many sessions
Plan on 6 to 8 sessions, about six to eight weeks apart. Hormonal hair can need more, and the American Academy of Dermatology notes that maintenance treatments may be needed later. The honest goal is long-term reduction: much less hair, and finer regrowth. See how many sessions you need.
Three Myths We Hear Often
“Shaving my stomach made the hair thicker.”
Shaving does not change the follicle. Regrowth feels coarser because the tip is cut bluntly. If the hair really is getting thicker over months or years, that is usually hormonal, not the razor.
“Laser on the stomach isn't safe.”
Laser light works at the level of the skin and hair follicle. It does not reach internal organs. The things that matter for safety on the stomach are the same as anywhere else: the right settings for your skin, no tan, and not being pregnant.
“If it comes back, the laser didn't work.”
Hormone-sensitive areas can grow new hairs over the years, especially around pregnancy or perimenopause. That is new growth, not a failed treatment, and a single maintenance session usually handles it.
What a Session Looks Like (and How Privacy Is Handled)
Lavish Beauty is a women-exclusive med spa, and treatments happen in private rooms with the door closed. For chest and stomach laser:
Before
Shave the area the night before or the morning of. Skip lotions and deodorant on the area that day. Avoid tanning and self-tanner.
During
You are draped so only the area being treated is uncovered. You wear protective eyewear. The stomach or chest takes roughly 10 to 20 minutes.
After
Some redness and small bumps around the follicles are normal for a few hours to a day or two. Wear soft, loose clothing and avoid hot tubs, heavy workouts and sun on the area for 24 to 48 hours.
Our aftercare guide has the full list. If you are pregnant or planning to be, read our pregnancy and breastfeeding guide first.
Cost: Single Areas or Full Body?
| Area | Per session |
|---|---|
| Chest | $100 |
| Stomach (including happy trail) | $100 |
| Underarms | $85 |
| Brazilian | $150 |
| Full body (all 16 areas) | $499 |
If the stomach is your only concern, a single area makes sense. But many women with a happy trail also want their underarms and bikini area done. Chest, stomach, underarms and Brazilian together come to $435 per session. Full body is $499 and covers every area from face to legs. Once you are treating three or four areas, it is worth comparing. Our guide is full body laser worth it? runs the numbers.
Full prices are on our pricing page. We are on Cornerstone Blvd NE, a few minutes from Redstone, Cityscape and Skyview Ranch, and open seven days a week.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for women to have hair on the stomach or chest?
+
Yes. A line of hair below the belly button, a few hairs around the chest, or hair between the breasts is common, and how much you have depends largely on genetics and hormones. If the hair is new, increasing quickly, or comes with irregular periods or acne, it is worth mentioning to your doctor, because excess coarse hair in these areas can be linked to hormonal conditions such as PCOS.
Does laser work on stomach and happy-trail hair?
+
Yes, when the hair is dark enough for the laser to target. The happy trail is often coarse and dark, which responds well. Very fine, light hair across the stomach responds poorly, and we will tell you honestly at your consultation which hairs are good candidates.
How many sessions do I need for the stomach or chest?
+
Most women need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced about six to eight weeks apart for body areas. Hormonally driven hair can need more, and occasional maintenance sessions afterwards are normal. You will usually notice slower, patchier regrowth after the first two or three sessions.
Does laser on the stomach hurt?
+
Most clients describe a quick snap, like a rubber band, followed by warmth. The stomach is usually one of the more comfortable areas. Our Candela GentleMax Pro cools the skin with a spray just before each pulse, which helps.
Can I get laser on my stomach during pregnancy?
+
No. We do not perform laser hair removal during pregnancy. Hair changes during pregnancy are common and often settle afterwards. Our pregnancy and breastfeeding guide explains when it is reasonable to start or restart.
Can hair around the nipples be treated?
+
Hair around the areola is very common. Whether and how it can be treated depends on the skin colour of the area and the hair. Ask at your consultation. Your technician will assess it and explain the options, which may include laser on some hairs and other methods on others.
How much does chest or stomach laser cost at Lavish Beauty?
+
Chest is $100 per session and stomach is $100 per session. If you are also treating other areas, full body laser is $499 per session and covers all 16 areas. Every price is on our pricing page.
