“Will laser fix my dark underarms?” is one of the questions we hear most often, usually asked quietly at the end of a consultation. It deserves a straight answer. Laser hair removal is a hair treatment, not a skin-lightening treatment. It will not bleach your skin. But for many women, a big part of what looks like dark underarms is actually hair: the shadow of coarse hair sitting just under the skin, plus the irritation, bumps and ingrown hairs that come from shaving it every day. Laser changes those things. This guide explains the common causes of underarm darkening, what laser can realistically change, what it cannot, and when darkening is a sign to see your doctor instead.

Why Underarms Look Darker
Underarm darkening usually has more than one cause at once. Working out which ones apply to you is the key to knowing what laser can help with.
1. The hair shadow
Shaving cuts hair at the surface, but the rest of the hair is still in the skin. With dark, coarse hair, that shows through as a grey or blue-black tint, even right after shaving. This is not a skin colour at all.
2. Shaving and waxing irritation
Daily shaving causes tiny cuts, razor bumps and ingrown hairs. In medium and deep skin tones, that repeated inflammation can leave behind post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: flat, darker patches that build up over time.
3. Friction
Skin rubbing on skin, tight sleeves and bra straps all create friction, and skin often responds by darkening.
4. Product irritation
Fragranced deodorants, alcohol-based sprays and harsh scrubs can irritate underarm skin, which can add to darkening.
5. Natural skin tone
It is normal for skin folds to be a little darker than the rest of your body, especially in medium and deep skin. This is not something to fix.
6. Acanthosis nigricans
Thickened, velvety, darker skin in folds such as the underarms, neck or groin. It is most often linked to insulin resistance and should be checked by a doctor. See the section below.
What Laser Changes
Laser hair removal reduces the number of hairs that grow back, over a series of sessions. For the underarm, that has three knock-on effects:
- ●The shadow fades. With fewer and finer hairs under the skin, the grey tint that shaving can never remove becomes much less visible. For many women, this is the biggest visible change.
- ●The shaving stops. No more daily razor means no more fresh cuts, razor burn and bumps, so the skin is not being inflamed over and over.
- ●Fewer ingrown hairs. Less hair means fewer hairs curling back into the skin, which means fewer bumps and fewer dark marks left behind. Our guide on laser and ingrown hairs goes deeper.
When the irritation stops, existing post-inflammatory darkening often softens slowly on its own. Medical sources describe it as something that usually improves over months, sometimes longer. That improvement is a side benefit of stopping the irritation. It varies from person to person and is not something we can promise.
What Laser Doesn't Change
Our Candela GentleMax Pro is used for hair removal only. It is not used to treat skin pigment, and laser hair removal will not:
- ●Lighten your natural skin tone.
- ●Remove darkening caused by friction or deodorant irritation, unless those causes also stop.
- ●Treat acanthosis nigricans, which depends on the underlying cause.
Be wary of any clinic that promises “underarm whitening” with laser hair removal, and be careful with skin-lightening creams bought online or abroad. Some contain ingredients that are not allowed in Canadian cosmetics. If you want advice on pigmentation, ask a doctor or dermatologist.
A note on risk
Any laser can cause temporary darkening if the settings are too strong for your skin. Underarm skin is often darker than the skin around it, so a careful technician adjusts for that. We patch test every new client and choose the wavelength after assessing your skin. Read more about laser on medium and deep skin.
When to See a Doctor First
Acanthosis nigricans looks different from shaving-related darkening. The American Academy of Dermatology describes skin that darkens and thickens and often feels like velvet, and notes that it can be a sign of pre-diabetes. Medical reviews also link it to insulin resistance, hormone disorders and some medications. Book an appointment with your family doctor if:
- ●The skin feels thicker or velvety, not just darker.
- ●You also have darkening on the back of your neck or in the groin.
- ●The darkening appeared or spread quickly.
- ●You have other symptoms such as increased thirst, irregular periods or new facial hair.
You can still have laser hair removal once your doctor has checked you. We just want you to know that this particular kind of darkening is a health signal, not a cosmetic one.
A Realistic Timeline
Consultation
Skin assessment, a look at your hair and any darkening, medical history, and a patch test.
Sessions 1–3
Regrowth becomes patchier and slower. Many women shave far less often and notice less shadow.
Sessions 4–8
Most of the coarse hair is gone. Remaining hairs are finer. Razor irritation is largely a thing of the past.
The months after
With no daily shaving, irritation-related darkening often softens gradually. Occasional maintenance sessions may be needed for new hairs.
Sessions for underarms are usually booked four to six weeks apart. For more on session counts, see how many laser sessions you need.
Gentle Underarm Care Between Sessions
- ●Shave, don't wax or pluck. Use a sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth, and use a fragrance-free gel.
- ●Switch to a fragrance-free deodorant. Skip it for 24 hours after each session.
- ●Stop scrubbing. Scrubbing darkened skin to “clean it up” adds friction and can make things worse.
- ●Loosen up. Breathable cotton and looser sleeves reduce friction, especially during workouts.
- ●Moisturize. A plain, fragrance-free moisturizer helps, especially in Calgary's dry winters.
Underarms are also one of the quickest areas to treat. Many clients from Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Redstone and across NE Calgary book them on a lunch break. Every price is on our pricing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will laser hair removal lighten my dark underarms?
+
Laser hair removal is not a skin-lightening treatment. What it does is reduce the hair, and that often changes how the underarm looks: the grey-blue shadow of hair under the skin fades, and you stop the daily shaving that causes irritation and ingrown hairs. If part of your darkening comes from that shadow or from shaving irritation, the area often looks more even over time. Darkening from friction, deodorant irritation, natural skin tone or a medical condition like acanthosis nigricans will not be removed by laser hair removal.
Why are my underarms darker than the rest of my skin?
+
Common reasons include the shadow of dark hair under the skin, irritation and ingrown hairs from shaving or waxing, friction from clothing, reactions to fragranced deodorants, a build-up of dead skin, and natural variation in skin tone, which is common in skin folds. Less often it is acanthosis nigricans, a velvety darkening linked to insulin resistance that should be checked by a doctor.
How many sessions until I notice a difference?
+
Many women notice less stubble and less shadow after two to three sessions. A full series is usually 6 to 8 sessions, four to six weeks apart for underarms. Any evening-out of irritation-related darkness tends to happen slowly over the months after you stop shaving, and it varies from person to person.
Is underarm laser safe for darker skin?
+
Yes, with the right device and settings. Underarm skin is often darker than surrounding skin, which your technician accounts for. Our Candela GentleMax Pro includes a 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength suited to medium and deep skin, and every new client is patch tested first.
Can laser make my underarms darker?
+
Temporary darkening (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) is a possible side effect of any laser, and it is more likely in darker skin or when settings are too strong. It usually fades. Choosing a clinic that assesses your skin type, patch tests, and adjusts settings lowers the risk, as does avoiding scrubbing and harsh products after sessions.
Can I wear deodorant after underarm laser?
+
Skip deodorant and antiperspirant for about 24 hours after a session, or until any redness settles. After that, a fragrance-free formula is kinder to the skin, especially if you have noticed irritation from scented products in the past.
How much does underarm laser cost?
+
Underarm laser hair removal at Lavish Beauty is $85 per session. Prices for every area are posted on our pricing page.
