Calgary Winter Skin: Why Chinooks & Dry Air Wreck Your Skin (and the Facials That Fix It)

Published September 2026 · 10 min read

If you have lived through even one Calgary winter, you know the feeling: skin that feels tight the moment you step out of the shower, flaky patches around the nose and brows, foundation that clings to every dry spot, and lips that never quite recover. This is not just “winter.” It is a very Calgary combination of dry prairie air, furnace heat, chinook swings and hard water, all wearing down your skin barrier at the same time. The good news is that it is fixable. In this guide we explain what is actually happening to your skin, which in-spa treatments help most in fall and winter (and which ones to time carefully), and the simple home routine that keeps your skin comfortable until spring. If you already know you need a reset, our facials in Calgary page is a good place to start.

Why Calgary Is So Hard on Skin

Women who move here from Vancouver, Toronto or abroad often say the same thing: their skin simply behaved differently within a few months. That is because Calgary stacks up several skin stressors that most cities only have one or two of.

Semi-arid, high-elevation air

Calgary sits at over a kilometre above sea level on the edge of the prairies, and its climate is dry for much of the year. Cold winter air holds very little moisture to begin with, so the air around you is constantly pulling water out of your skin rather than giving any back.

Chinook whiplash

Chinooks are the warm, dry winds that roll down off the Rockies and can turn a frigid morning into a mild afternoon. They are a welcome break for your mood, but for your skin they mean rapid swings in temperature and a blast of very dry, often gusty wind. Skin that is constantly adjusting between extremes tends to become reactive: redness, stinging when you apply products, and flare-ups of existing sensitivity.

Furnace heat, eight months a year

When cold, dry outdoor air is heated indoors, its relative humidity drops even further. You spend most of a Calgary winter in that air — at work, in the car with the heat blasting, and asleep in a furnace-warmed bedroom. That is hours of steady moisture loss every single day.

Hard water and hot showers

Calgary's tap water is on the hard side, carrying minerals that can leave a film on skin and make cleansers feel harsher. Pair that with the long, hot showers everyone craves in January, and you strip away the natural oils your barrier depends on.

Snow glare

Bright, clear winter days are one of the best things about living here, but snow reflects UV back up at your face. Weekend ski trips to the mountains add altitude on top of that. Winter UV is easy to forget, and it quietly adds to pigmentation and uneven tone.

What Is Actually Happening: Your Skin Barrier

The outermost layer of your skin works like a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks and a mix of natural lipids is the mortar. When that wall is intact, it holds water in and keeps irritants out. Every stressor above chips away at the mortar. Water escapes faster, the surface gets rough and flaky, and products that never bothered you in summer suddenly sting.

Two things are worth separating. Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water. A Calgary winter can give you both at once — which is why oily and combination skin types are often surprised to find themselves both shiny and flaky. The fix is the same principle for everyone: gently clear away the build-up of dead cells, put water back into the skin, and then seal it in so it stays there.

The winter rule of thumb

In winter, gentle beats aggressive. Scrubbing harder at flakes, or piling on more strong actives, usually makes a compromised barrier worse. Exfoliate less often and more gently, hydrate more, and let professional treatments do the heavier lifting in a controlled way.

The In-Spa Treatments That Help in Fall & Winter

Here is how our treatment menu lines up against winter skin, and who each option suits best.

HydraFacial — the fastest reset for dehydrated skin

A HydraFacial is built for exactly this problem. It cleanses and gently exfoliates away the dull, flaky layer, uses painless vortex suction to clear congested pores (a common side effect of heavier winter creams), and then infuses hydrating serums back into freshly prepared skin. There is no downtime, so it fits into a lunch hour or the week before a holiday event.

Our Signature HydraFacial is $199 (60 minutes) and the Platinum is $375 (90 minutes). Both include LED light therapy and a hydrojelly mask; the Platinum adds sculpting lymphatic work, a personalized booster and extra time. Learn more on our HydraFacial Calgary page.

Signature Custom Facial — for reactive, chinook-stressed skin

When your skin is red, sensitized or stinging, a fully customized facial is often the kinder choice. In the Signature Custom ($110, 60 minutes), your esthetician assesses your skin on the day and chooses calming, barrier-supporting products and techniques rather than following a fixed protocol. If you only have half an hour, the Signature Express ($69, 30 minutes) is a quick hydrating refresh. For firming and lifting, the Signature Botox Facial ($200, 90 minutes) uses a lifting facial technique and a contouring mask — no injectables or injections.

Green Peel — renewal in the low-UV season

The Dr. Schrammek Green Peel is an herbal peel that renews the surface for smoother texture, more even tone and a fresher look. It comes in three levels: Fresh $215 (no downtime), Energy $275 (light flaking for a few days) and Classic $350 (around five days of visible peeling). Because freshly renewed skin needs careful sun protection, fall and winter are a smart time to book the deeper levels. See our Green Peel Calgary page for details.

Microneedling — a fall and winter project

Microneedling stimulates your skin's own collagen to improve texture, fine lines and acne scarring over a series of sessions. It also calls for diligent sun protection while skin recovers, so many women plan their series from fall into early spring. Pricing is $300 for the full face or $350 with neck. Explore it on our microneedling Calgary page.

Not sure which one fits your skin? A $10 consultation (credited toward your first treatment) lets us look at your skin in person and recommend a plan. You can also read our guide to the best facial for your skin type.

What to Time Carefully

  • ●Dermaplaning ($50) on chapped skin. Dermaplaning lifts away dead cells and fine vellus hair so moisturizer absorbs better and makeup sits smoothly — genuinely useful in winter. But if your skin is cracked, windburned or stinging, calm it first. Pairing dermaplaning with a hydrating facial is usually a better winter plan than booking it alone during a cold snap. Learn more on our dermaplaning page.
  • ●Deeper Green Peel levels before big events. The Classic level involves several days of visible peeling. Book it well ahead of holiday parties, not the week of.
  • ●Treatments right before a ski trip. Freshly treated skin plus mountain altitude, snow glare and wind is a tough combination. Leave a buffer after peels and microneedling before a mountain weekend.
  • ●Stacking strong actives at home. If you use retinoids or exfoliating acids, tell us before any treatment. You may need to pause them for a few days, and in winter many women do better using them less often.

A Barrier-First Home Routine for Calgary Winters

Professional treatments work best when your daily routine is not undoing them. None of this requires expensive products — it is mostly about swapping habits.

Your winter routine

Switch to a gentle, non-foaming cleanser

Cream, milk or gel cleansers that leave skin soft, not squeaky. Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.

Keep showers short and warm

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests five to ten minutes with warm rather than hot water.

Moisturize on damp skin

Apply a hydrating serum and then a richer moisturizer within minutes of washing, while skin is still slightly damp, to lock water in.

Run a humidifier while you sleep

A portable humidifier in your bedroom counters furnace-dried air overnight. Clean it regularly to prevent mould.

Exfoliate less, not more

Once a week is plenty for most skin in winter. Skip gritty scrubs on flaky patches — hydration lifts flakes more kindly.

Wear SPF every morning, snow or not

A broad-spectrum SPF 30+ on your face, ears and neck, reapplied if you are outdoors for hours, especially skiing or skating.

Protect before you step outside

A lip balm and a scarf over your lower face on windy days make a real difference, especially when a chinook wind picks up.

If you are prepping for a winter wedding, the same principles apply on a longer timeline. Our bridal skincare timeline maps out when to book each treatment.

Bonus: Winter Is Laser Hair Removal Season

While you are thinking about your skin this season, it is worth knowing that fall and winter are the ideal time to start laser hair removal in Calgary. Laser works best on skin that has not been recently tanned, and with less sun exposure between sessions it is much easier to stay on your four-to-eight-week schedule. Start in October or November and you will be several sessions into your series by the time shorts and sandals come back out.

We use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a dual-wavelength laser that treats all skin tones, for permanent hair reduction over a series of sessions. For a month-by-month breakdown, read the best time of year for laser hair removal in Calgary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my skin get so dry in Calgary winters?

+

Calgary sits in a semi-arid climate, and cold winter air holds very little moisture. Once that air is heated indoors by a furnace, the relative humidity in your home drops even further, so water evaporates from your skin faster than your barrier can hold it in. Add chinook swings that take skin from bitter cold to warm, dry wind in a day, hot showers, and the city's naturally hard tap water, and the skin barrier gets worn down from several directions at once. The result is tightness, flaking, redness and makeup that sits on dry patches.

What is the best facial for dry winter skin in Calgary?

+

For most women, a HydraFacial is the most direct fix for winter dehydration because it cleanses, gently exfoliates, extracts and then infuses hydrating serums in one visit. At Lavish Beauty the Signature HydraFacial is $199 for 60 minutes and the Platinum is $375 for 90 minutes, and both include LED light therapy and a hydrojelly mask. If your skin is reactive or sensitized from the cold, the Signature Custom facial ($110, 60 minutes) lets your esthetician build a calmer, barrier-focused treatment around what your skin needs that day.

Is dermaplaning safe in winter?

+

Yes, but timing matters. Dermaplaning ($50) removes dead surface cells and fine vellus hair, which helps moisturizer absorb and makeup sit smoothly. When your skin is already chapped, cracked, windburned or stinging, it is better to calm the barrier first and dermaplane at a later visit. Many clients pair dermaplaning with a hydrating facial rather than booking it alone in the coldest weeks, and your esthetician will tell you honestly if your skin is not ready that day.

Why is fall and winter a good time for a Green Peel or microneedling?

+

Both treatments leave skin temporarily more sensitive to the sun, and careful sun protection afterward is part of getting a good result. Shorter days, lower sun angles and more time indoors make fall and winter a practical season to schedule them. You still need daily SPF, especially with snow glare, but it is far easier to protect fresh skin in November than during patio season.

Do I really need sunscreen in a Calgary winter?

+

Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that snow reflects the sun's UV rays, which increases your chance of sunburn, and that a large share of UV passes through clouds. Calgary also sees many bright, clear winter days, and skiing or snowshoeing in the mountains adds altitude to the mix. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning protects both your skin and the results of any facial or peel you invest in.

Is winter a good time to start laser hair removal?

+

Fall and winter are an excellent time to start. Laser hair removal works best on skin that has not been recently tanned, and less sun exposure between sessions makes it easier to stay on schedule. Starting in the fall also means you are several sessions into your series by spring. At Lavish Beauty, laser hair removal is performed with the Candela GentleMax Pro, and the $10 consultation is credited toward your first treatment.

Should I use a humidifier for my skin?

+

A humidifier is one of the simplest, most effective changes you can make in a Calgary winter. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends boosting home humidity with one, ideally a portable unit in your bedroom while you sleep, and cleaning it regularly to prevent mould. Sleeping seven or eight hours in slightly more humid air gives your skin a real break from furnace-dried air.
