What to Expect at Your Calgary Prenatal Massage
Pre-Session Consultation
Every prenatal session begins with a quiet, unhurried consultation. Your female RMT will ask about your trimester, due date, any pregnancy complications or concerns flagged by your OB-GYN or midwife, and the specific areas where you're holding tension. We require that you be past the first trimester (after week 13), and we always recommend that you have your healthcare provider's general approval before booking — particularly if your pregnancy is considered high-risk.
Side-Lying Positioning
You will lie comfortably on your side, supported by a thoughtful arrangement of bolsters and pillows — under your belly, between your knees, beneath your head, and behind your back. This position is the gold standard for prenatal massage: it relieves pressure on the inferior vena cava, supports the natural curves of your spine, and allows your therapist full access to the muscles that need attention. We do not use prenatal massage tables with cut-outs, as research suggests side-lying is safer and more comfortable.
Pregnancy-Safe Techniques
Pressure is moderate and nurturing — never deep tissue. Your therapist will work the lower back, hips, glutes, shoulders, neck, scalp, hands, and feet with smooth, flowing strokes designed to ease specific pregnancy discomforts. Certain pressure points (particularly on the wrists, ankles, and lower abdomen) are avoided. Sessions are 45, 60, or 75 minutes depending on your needs and comfort.
Aftercare & Follow-Up
After your session, your RMT will offer hydration tips, gentle stretches you can safely do at home, and a recommended cadence for follow-up appointments — typically every 2 to 4 weeks in the second trimester, increasing to weekly as you approach your due date. Many of our clients continue with postnatal massage in the weeks after delivery to support recovery and emotional well-being.

Prenatal Massage Calgary — Common Questions
Is prenatal massage safe during pregnancy?
+
Yes — prenatal massage is widely considered safe and beneficial during the second and third trimesters when performed by a trained therapist. At Lavish Beauty, we use side-lying positioning with supportive bolsters and pillows, gentle pressure, and pregnancy-safe techniques. We recommend obtaining your OB-GYN or midwife's approval before booking, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy.
Can I get a prenatal massage in my first trimester?
+
We do not perform prenatal massage during the first trimester. While many practitioners disagree on this, our clinical policy is to wait until the second trimester (after week 13) for added safety and peace of mind. If you are in your first trimester, we would be happy to schedule your appointment for after week 13.
How is prenatal massage different from a regular massage?
+
Prenatal massage uses side-lying positioning instead of lying face-down or flat on your back, with carefully placed bolsters under your belly, between your knees, and supporting your head. Pressure is lighter and more nurturing, certain abdominal and lower-leg pressure points are avoided, and the entire session is tailored to support — not strain — your changing body.
How much does prenatal massage cost in Calgary?
+
Prenatal massage at Lavish Beauty starts at $80 for 45 minutes, $100 for 60 minutes, and $120 for 75 minutes. Transparent, all-inclusive pricing — no hidden fees. Direct billing is coming soon.
Will my therapist be female?
+
Yes. Lavish Beauty is a women-exclusive spa and all of our registered massage therapists are female. Many expectant mothers feel most comfortable with a female RMT during pregnancy, and our entire team is trained specifically in prenatal techniques.
What conditions can prenatal massage help relieve?
+
Prenatal massage commonly relieves lower back pain, sciatica, hip pain, leg cramps, swelling and edema in the feet and ankles, shoulder and neck tension, and pregnancy-related insomnia. It also reduces stress hormones, improves circulation, and supports overall emotional well-being throughout pregnancy.
How often should I get a prenatal massage?
+
Most expectant mothers benefit from a prenatal massage every 2 to 4 weeks through the second trimester, increasing to every 1 to 2 weeks in the third trimester as discomfort intensifies. Your therapist will recommend a schedule tailored to your symptoms and stage of pregnancy.
